UN Cultural Diversity Day

UN Cultural Diversity Day

Every year on May 21st, the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development urges everyone to do their part to bridge the gap between cultures. The day is often referred to as Diversity Day.

According to the UN, bridging this gap is essential for peace, development, and stability. When we deepen our understanding of the values of cultural diversity we can achieve these four goals:

  • Support sustainable systems for the governance of culture.
  • Achieve a balanced flow of cultural goods and services.
  • Integrate culture into the frameworks of sustainable development.
  • Promote human rights and fundamental freedoms.

These four goals were established during the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.
Besides achieving these goals, embracing other cultures helps us to lead more fulfilling lives. This fulfillment happens intellectually, spiritually, and morally. How exactly do/can we embrace other cultures?

1. Visit a Cultural Museum or Exhibition

Explore local or virtual museums dedicated to other cultures. Museums are known as places where culture comes together; hubs of information, understanding and creativity.

2. Learn About Another Religion

Understanding different religions can bridge divides and enrich your perspective. Ask friends about their faith or teach your children about world religions.

3. Plan an International Movie Night

Discover films from Bollywood, Nollywood, or other global cinemas. Streaming platforms offer many foreign films that showcase diverse cultures.

4. Listen to Music from Different Cultures

Experience the world through music - from Spotify, YouTube or even attending international music festivals

5. Cook Traditional Food with a Friend

We all love cooking food, right? Experiment with global recipes. Invite a friend to share their favorite traditional dishes and cook together.

6. Read Traditional Stories from Other Cultures

Explore folk tales from around the world. These stories provide insights into different cultures and their values.

7. Volunteer for Diversity and Inclusion

Join organisations that promote diversity. Volunteering can connect you with new people and perspectives.

8. Learn Another Language

Try learning a new language through apps or online exchanges. Even basic phrases can enhance your cultural understanding and communication skills. Download Duolingo - an amazing app to help kickstart your learning.
