Hayley started her journey with Gill Cooke Personnel (Loughborough) 14 years ago.
As the longest-standing consultant in the team, we caught up with her to learn about her experiences with Gill Cooke and how she has found the transition into The Recruitment Group so far…
What was the first thing that attracted you to work with Gill Cooke Personnel?
After spending some time living in Leeds and working in recruitment, I decided that it was time to move back to my hometown of Loughborough. I was looking for my next role and was told by a friend that Gill Cooke Personnel was the best agency to register with during my job search. Upon reaching the website I came across an advert for a Recruitment Consultant. I immediately called the office and sent over my CV to the manager at the time, Caroline, and was then asked to come in for an interview!
Tell us about how your journey with Gill Cooke Personnel began...
Having worked for a national recruitment company in Leeds, I was used to working alongside Account Managers on large accounts and managing the contractor base. The move to Gill Cooke Personnel is when I started to fill vacancies and working directly with clients and candidates, I still really enjoy this part of the job.
Originally when I started at Gill Cooke Personnel, I worked on the temp desk filling short-term vacancies and I did this for 6 years. I then took a year off to have my daughter and returned on a part-time basis as the permanent consultant. Due to Covid, permanent office-based recruitment naturally slowed down, so I was tasked with filling temporary roles; both office-based and scientific - which was a fresh challenge!
And how did you find the transition into The Recruitment Group?
Naturally, I was apprehensive at first. Being part of Gill Cooke Personnel for so long, you do get used to working in a certain way. However, it has been a really smooth transition. Being part of a larger group; we have access to things we didn’t before, processes have been streamlined and everyone at Recruitment Investments Limited has been hugely supportive - especially during the last 12 months!
What do you enjoy most about working with the group?
The people! There’s always a great atmosphere in our office, we look out for each other and everyone is pleased with their colleague’s success.
What does your average day look like?
The short answer is, there is no average day!
I always have a ‘to-do’ list for the day, however, this has usually gone out of the window by 8.30am! My role is very busy as I am now dealing with both temporary and permanent roles. The temporary roles can be quite reactive with a quick turnaround, so speed is of the essence and knowing my candidate base is key. The permanent roles require a more in-depth approach. When I am not filling roles, I can be advertising new vacancies, searching for candidates, interviewing candidates, speaking to clients and generally being on hand to look after our lovely temp base.
What do you find most challenging about your role?
There is a small amount of frustration sometimes, for instance, you may have worked really hard to work on a role which then goes on hold, or sometimes candidates may have a change of heart. It’s often the things that you can’t control as a recruiter, but that’s what makes it interesting.
And what would you say is the most satisfying part of your role?
Getting a candidate into the right job!
I’ve helped lots of candidates who like me, wanted to move back to the area to find a new job. We often have candidates that come back to us after a few years of initially placing them, who are seeking a new challenge. Or, you place a great candidate and they come back to you when they need staff themselves.
I know it sounds cliché, but you can really change people’s lives!
If someone you knew had an interest in working with The Recruitment Group, how would you describe us?
As a company, the customer care element is so important to us. Finding the right candidate for the right job is key and we do that by getting to know both the candidates and clients.
Even if we don’t have anything available at the time people enquire, we always make the effort to keep them updated, catch up to see how they’re doing and also give them advice during their search. We always want to go the extra mile for clients and candidates.
